Masterclass Challenge—Can we really learn a new skill in a week?

Laura and I love Masterclass, the website that features experts at the pinnacle of their field sharing their expertise via video lessons. I’ve watched David Sedaris Teaches Storytelling and Humor, Serena Williams Teaches Tennis and Tan France Teaches Style for Everyone. Laura has enjoyed classes by Editor Anna Wintour, Chef Alice Waters and Architect Frank Gehry. It’s fascinating and fun to spend time with these luminaries in an intimate forum, getting the inside scoop on how they work and achieve success.

Watching is one thing, but can we actually learn new skills through Masterclass? In this challenge we aim to find out. Laura and I have each chosen a class and we’re giving it a week to learn as much as we can.

I’m taking Jake Shimabukoro Teaches ‘Ukulele. I’ve always wanted to play an instrument and the ukulele seems the most approachable (and adorable). I put it on my Christmas list and received one from Liam, so now it’s time to get strumming. Shimabukoro creates a dazzling array of sounds on his ukulele. I’d be happy if I could play a simple 3-chord tune and maybe sing along.

Laura’s choice is Yotam Ottolenghi Teaches Modern Middle Eastern Cooking. He’s a famous Israeli-English chef and restauranteur. Laura and her husband have been to several of his restaurants in London and are huge fans. But Ottolenghi’s recipes are notoriously complex. Can Laura replicate some of his signature dishes with confidence? She has the extra challenge of doing this from the kitchen of her rented house on Bermuda, an island where ingredients may be hard to find.

We’ll report back on our progress next week. In the meantime, follow along on Instagram Stories at @stylechallengers for behind-the-scenes looks at our progress.
